High school roundup: Seneca Valley star Lexie Hames no-hits Canon-McMillan; Moniteau pops Union/A-C Valley

Lexie Hames added another stellar performance to her softball resume Wednesday.

Seneca Valley’s senior pitcher hurled a no-hitter, striking out 18 and walking one in the Raiders’ 5-0 victory over Canon-McMillan.

Liv Herrem smacked a three-run home run, and Abby Kalkowski hit a solo shot.

Harley Hornick singled in a run for SV (14-2, 12-2).

North Catholic 4, Blackhawk 0 — Kennedy Brown fired a three-hit shutout for the Trojanettes (7-7, 4-6), striking out eight in the process. She was also 1-for-4 at the plate, while Natalia Rushak went 3-for-4 with an RBI, double and stolen base.

North snapped a four-game losing skid with the victory.

Moniteau 16, Union/A-C Valley 5 — As part of a 22-hit Warriors effort, Lily Staab had a game-best four hits, all singles, while Halle Beatty, Alex Stewart and Emma Fitzingo each had three.

Shaler 9, Mars 0 — The Planets (3-15) were limited to four hits in the defeat.

Cranberry 10, Karns City 0 (5 inn.) — The Gremlins were one-hit in the setback.

Track and field

North Catholic’s girls team reached Tuesday’s WPIAL Class 2A team title meet by downing Shady Side Academy, Shenango and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the semifinal round.

Meanwhile, Freeport was bested by Carlynton in another Class 2A semi and Knoch by North Allegheny and Seneca Valley by South Fayette in Class 3A.

Knoch’s boys were ousted by North Allegheny in Class 3A.

The WPIAL Class 3A team finals will be held Tuesday at West Mifflin High School; Class 2A will be at at Peters Township.

Slippery Rock vs. Grove City — Tessa Szymanski won the 800 and 3,200 while also running a leg on the winning 4x800 relay team to help Slippery Rock’s girls defeat Grove City 83-67.

The Rockets’ lone victory in a 129-21 loss to the Eagles in the boys meet came from Dustin Joyce in the long jump.

Baseball

Seneca Valley’s Ryan Piekutoski and Wes Conville both hit a solo home run in a 5-0 win over Butler.

The Raiders (10-6, 7-4) will attempt to sweep the three-game WPIAL section series against Butler (10-6, 6-5) when the teams meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Pullman Park.

Knoch 6, Derry 4 — Dylan Roth doubled and drove in a run on a 2-for-4 day, and Dante Pelloni (1-for-3) drove in two more runs as the Knights finished off a winning effort in a game that began Tuesday and was finished Wednesday due to Tuesday’s severe storms.

Mars 8, West Allegheny 4 — The Planets also finished a game that began 24 hours earlier, building a 6-0 lead after two innings before holding on the rest of the way.

Zachary Hugus pitched three scoreless innings for the win, fanning three batters. Zachary Rozman went 2-for-3 out of the third spot with three runs and two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Grady Spiegle (3-for-3) doubled twice.

Cranberry 7, Karns City 6 — Colton Christie and Koen Williams both had multi-hit games in the loss.

Boys volleyball

Butler handled host Moon rather easily, earning a sweep Wednesday by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

Peter Zulick and Jackson Morgus both tallied four blocks in the win while Kole Wojnar contributed 14 assists and nine digs.

Butler (6-6, 3-5) hosts Deer Lakes on Thursday.
