High school roundup: Freeport baseball’s offense dominates Yough; WPIAL track semifinals postponed
The top of Freeport baseball’s order lit up Yough pitching Tuesday before rain could wash the game away.
The Yellowjackets won 11-5, scoring eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as Gavin Tola, Luke Whitfield, Michael Hanz and Kason Barker combined to go 5-of-12 with seven runs scored and six RBIs. Hanz and Tola each doubled, and Hanz swiped two bags.
Dustin Kohan fired three shutout innings in relief, striking out five and allowing just one hit.
Union/A-C Valley 9, Brockway 3 — Sebastian Link had a productive day at the plate, on the base paths and on the mound in the Falcon Knights’ win. The starting pitcher fanned two in two innings, and went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. He also stole four bases, as UACV swiped 11 bags in total.
Alex Walzak was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Clemson commit Lexie Hames got a reprieve in the circle, so Abby Kalkowski did her best impression by striking out seven in five shutout innings, allowing just one hit in Seneca Valley’s 15-0 win over Mt. Lebanon.
Neve Miller was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, two runs and a double. Hames drove in three runs and scored twice from the leadoff spot. She also doubled and was intentionally walked three times.
North Allegheny 5, Butler 0 (5.5 inn.) — The Golden Tornado recorded just two hits, from Kyra Olivares and Marissa Sklencar, in a rain-shortened shutout loss. Butler faces Woodland Hills on Wednesday.
Indiana 1, Freeport 0 (5 inn.) — Despite solid pitching that allowed just five hits, the Yellowjackets could not muster enough to overcome Indiana in a rain-shortened game.
Ali Smith struck out two in two innings of scoreless relief. Taelyn Toy was 1-for-1 with a stolen base.
Brockway 6, Union/A-C Valley 2 — The Falcon Knights scored two first-inning runs but couldn’t hold on. Alivya Hartzell (2-for-2) doubled and scored the first run, and Lillian Hayden (1-for-3) singled, drove in Hartzell and later scored.
Ashlyn Walker struck out eight and allowed four earned runs in a losing effort.
Hampton 6, North Catholic 1 — Clare Kotwica’s home run accounted for the lone tally for North Catholic (6-7, 3-6).
The WPIAL postponed the start of the district team track and field tournament due to Tuesday’s severe weather. The semifinals will now be held Wednesday, at the same sites and times. Butler’s boys and girls are hosting one of the semifinals at 3 p.m.
Karns City boys 95.5, Union/A-C Valley 54.5 — Noah Weiland swept the distance races in the Gremlins’ win. He ran the 1600-meter race in 5:23.2 and the 3200 in 11:02.6. Kolby Blair took home wins in the shot put (44 feet, 4 inches) and discus (124-11.5).
Karns City swept all three relays in uncontested races. The Falcon Knight’s Nicholas Ielase won the 110 hurdles (16.4) and 300 hurdles (43.6). Logan Skibinski swept the 100 (11.2) and 200 (22.3) dashes.
Karns City girls 104, Union/A-C Valley 42 — The Gremlins nearly swept the track events, and Mya Jones won two field events to run away with Monday’s dual-meet. Jones won the long jump in 16-8.5 and the high jump in 4-10, and finished second in the 100.
Phoebe Brandon won the 100 in 12.7 and came in second in the long jump.
Mars was swept by Shaler by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-21.
No. 2 Gateway swept No. 15 Mars 5-0 Monday in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Tennis Team Championships.
