Mary Ellen Reed Roth Cupps, 87, of Butler died Thursday morning at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Born on April 27, 1926, in Greenville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Luther H. Roth and Lula (Reed) Roth.

Mary Ellen had attended Thiel College in Greenville, was a homemaker and previously worked as a long-distance operator for the Bell Telephone Company in Greenville and Pittsburgh.

She was a member of the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Meridian, the Christian Mothers of St. Fidelis, was an active member at St. Fidelis training Altar servers and Eucharistic Ministers and in 2001 she received the “Manifesting the Kingdom” award from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. She was an officer and treasurer of St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Fidelis Church, was past president and lifetime award winner at Meridian P.T.A. and was a former past president of the Meridian Boosters Auxiliary.

Surviving are her sons, Jeffrey E. Cupps and his wife, Catherine, the Rev. David Warren Cupps, all of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Kathleen Ann Cupps of Butler; two granddaughters, Allison Reed Cupps of Washington, D.C., and Emily Reed Cupps of Richmond, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Regis E. Cupps, who she married on June 21, 1949, he died Aug. 14, 2006, and her three brothers, Richard Roth, Harold Roth and Warren Roth.

CUPPS — Friends of Mary Ellen Reed Roth Cupps, who died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian. Her son, the Rev. David Cupps, will officiate.Interment will follow in St. John's Parish Cemetery, Coylesville.Memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.The Bereavement Committee of St. Fidelis Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home for a Parish Prayer Service.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
