Obama pardons nine people

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has granted the first pardons of his presidency, to nine people convicted of crimes ranging from cocaine possession to mutilation of coins.

The White House announced the pardons today as Obama was in the air on the way back from a surprise visit to Afghanistan.

No well-known people were on the list and most of the crimes seemed low-grade. Five involved drug or liquor offenses.
