Vibrant vision

Colby Schukart, of West Sunbury, was diagnosed as colorblind in elementary school. On Wednesday, he received an early Father's Day gift: a pair of color-enhancing glasses from his partner, Kelly Negron, and his daughter, 8-month-old Nyx Schukart.
Man sees colors clearly for the first time

MUDDY CREEK TWP — Colby Schukart found out he was colorblind when a teacher saw him coloring the sky purple during his early school years. He could see only variations of primary colors his entire life.

On Wednesday, Schukart, 26, of West Sunbury, saw the full color of a cloudy sky at Moraine State Park, where his girlfriend, Kelly Negron, surprised him with an early Father's Day gift of a pair of color-enhancing glasses.

The family trip with their 8-month-old daughter, Nyx Schukart, was not what Schukart was expecting that day, but when he looked around with the glasses, he said he could see a difference.

“Her hair is crazy different,” he said while looking at his daughter's red-tinted locks. “I'm kind of impressed.”Negron said she saw a Facebook post by EnChroma Inc. announcing a contest for free color-enhancing glasses that would be awarded specifically to fathers. She won a pair to give to Schukart, and seeing him look around the park with them was a joy.“I'm really happy he is finally able to experience what colors are,” she said. “I'm hoping they make things pop for him.”Kent Streeb, a spokesman for EnChroma Inc., said one in 12 men are colorblind, and one in 200 women are colorblind.A colorblind person, he said, in most cases sees only primary colors. All other colors run together into duller shades. The glasses help correct eyesight to be able to take in the rest of the colors.

Streeb said this is the first time EnChroma held a nationwide glasses giveaway contest, which was aimed at providing a unique Father's Day gift idea.“People are always looking for something unique for Father's Day,” Streeb said. “It makes a lot of sense to do something like this to help colorblind dads and grandfathers get together with their kids and see their hair color or their eyes or the sunsets.”While the sky was a little overcast Wednesday, Negron brought balloons of different colors, so Schukart could see the difference the glasses made. He also enjoyed looking at his daughter's eyes and hair.Schukart didn't know colorblindness could be altered by a simple pair of glasses, but he said they were a pleasant surprise.“I didn't think it would just be glasses that would do it,” Schukart said. “Or, before I thought it would be more common to correct colorblindness. This is pretty cool.”
