Larry Johnson a godsend for owners
PHILADELPHIA — Larry Johnson went in the eighth round of our draft behind luminaries such as J.J. Arrington, DeShaun Foster and Michael Clayton.
In fact, he was the fourth Johnson taken; selected well after Rudi, Chad and — the biggest bust of them all — Andre. Anybody who took those guys got the wrong Johnson, that's for sure.
Now that Priest Holmes is out for the season, having Larry Johnson on your roster is like finding a crumpled $20 bill in your dryer. If tackle Willie Roaf were healthy, it'd be a 50.
"Larry Johnson has already carried the load. He knows he can do it," said Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil. "He just doesn't have a Priest Holmes backing him up like he backed up Priest Holmes."
For fantasy owners, that's the winning lottery ticket. Or as Nick Shaiko, of Wynnewood, says, "It's like finding Charlize Theron under your Christmas tree."
"I have him as a backup in another league and posted him as trade bait (on the electronic bulletin board). I got six e-mails back instantly."
Shaiko traded Johnson and Reggie Brown for Brian Westbrook and Marvin Harrison. That's how much Johnson's stock has gone up.
Kansas City also has a very favorable schedule starting Sunday with a visit to Buffalo (31st against the run) and a trip next week to Houston (32nd against the run).
All I have in my dryer is lint, otherwise known as Mewelde Moore.
Nice work by Joe Shields, of Port Richmond, Pa., who won last week's Chad Johnson contest with a guess that nearly hit the bull's-eye.The question was how many receiving yards Johnson would gain against the Ravens last week and, in case of a tie, how many catches he'd get. The Bengals receiver had five catches for 91 yards.Shields and fellow reader John Murray, from Woodbury, N.J., each guessed 92 yards, but Shields wins a Philadelphia Daily News shirt based on his guess of six catches vs. Murray's guess of seven. Thanks to all for participating.
The Packers have outscored their opponents, 168-159, and have a 1-7 record to show for it. The disparity is a result of their 52-3 win over New Orleans in Week 5.
Rams quarterback Marc Bulger:He's back, as are top receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce (don't worry about him being listed as questionable). Only wish the Rams were at home this week, instead of at Seattle.Bears running back Cedric Benson:He's supposed to start ahead of Thomas Jones, who has sore ribs. Regardless of who starts, the matchup against the 49ers makes Benson a good No. 3 option and worth grabbing as insurance for Jones owners.Falcons quarterback Michael Vick:Plays four of his next five indoors (three at home, one at Detroit). Oh, and how much would his value go up if Terrell Owens ended up there? Just something for those in keeper leagues to think about.
Packers running back Samkon Gado:Just when you think you have it bad, some people are playing Gado instead of LaDainian Tomlinson this week because the Chargers are on bye. That's the only circumstance he should be playing, because the Packers — at Atlanta — are generally dreadful indoors.Cardinals wide receiver Bryant Johnson:He was supposed to fill in for Anquan Boldin, but he hurt a shoulder in practice and is now questionable.Patriots running back Corey Dillon:His ankle injury is really becoming a hindrance. Dillon's only had one 100-yard game all season.
San Francisco at Chicago:Clear, but 22 mph winds.New England at Miami:Rain, 10 mph winds.Minnesota at New York Giants:Clear, but 12 mph winds.Kansas City at Buffalo:Rain, 23 mph winds.St. Louis at Seattle:Rain, 14 mph winds.
