Modified driver breezes to victory

BUFFALO TWP — Everything fell into place for Brian Swartzlander.

The Leechburg driver of the No. 83 drew the pole for the BRP Modified Tour feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway and led the 30-lap event from start to finish.

Whenever Swartzlander approached lap traffic — or so it seemed — a car would spin out elsewhere on the track, creating a restart. There were seven restarts in all.

"Those restarts were scaring me, though," Swartzlander said. "All it takes is one mistake and the whole thing can go wrong."

Swartzlander built a full straightaway lead during the first half of the race and repeatedly got effective jumps on the restarts to maintain the advamtage.

"Usually I don't like to start on the pole, but that was the place to be tonight," Swartzlander admitted. "There was a nice spot on the bottom that I could use to shoot off to the top. The top is where the line was for me."

It's also where second- and third-place finishers Del Rougeux Jr. and Jeremiah Shingledecker wanted to be.

"I thought about trying the bottom and pushing up," Shingledecker said. "But Brian was really quick. I was afraid of getting into him. The restarts didn't help me. I slipped back into third because of them."

Shingledecker started fourth, but got into second by the 14th lap. Rougeux started up front alongside Swartzlander.

He would have preferred different company.

"Yeah, I wouldn't have minded seeing someone else up there with me," Rougeux said. "I would have liked to have seen some lapped traffic, too, but that never happened.

"Brian knows this track so well. He has more laps in on this track than I have in racing."

Lapped traffic could have helped Shingledecker as well.

"Lapped cars are a game-changer every time," Shingledecker aid. "I would have loved to have seen some."

Swartzlander began the night one point behind Gary Smoker for the BRP series points lead. Smoker was not at Friday's race, giving Swartzlander the points lead.

"I'm not going to run for BRP series points this year," Swartzlander said. "We'll run their local stuff, but we're not going to travel with that series."

The next area BRPseries stop is in July at Tri-City Speedway.

Swartzlander's win was his third at Lernerville this season and 57th of his career at the Sarver oval. He has eight career wins in the BRP series.

In other features:

n Mike Lutz of Mercer started fourth in the Sprint feature, took advantage of some misfortune to pole-sitter Charlie Holben and won his first Lernerville feature of the season.

While leading the race, Holben was forced to the pits after coming into contact with race-trailer Lindsay Enscoe on the 11th lap.

Lutz won a feature here Aug. 10, 2007. Friday's win marked only his second at the Sarver track since 1997.

"We weren't even sure we were coming down here tonight," Lutz said. "But we ran well at the Outlaws show here and it looks like rain tomorrow, so we figured we'd better try to get a race in. I'm sure glad we came."

Rimersburg's Scott Priester finished second after starting on the pole.

Lutz bought his car from All-Stars and Outlaws driver Stevie Smith, who won a Sprint All-Star race in it at Lernerville recently.

• Jared Miley of South Park started in the front row and led the Late Model feature from start to finish, holding off Greg Satterlee for the checkered flag. It was only his second career win at Lernerville.

Miley also won the feature at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway last Saturday night.

• Bob Egley of Kittanning started in the first row for the Pure Stock feature, but never led until grabbing the top spot from Jason Fosnaught with three laps remaining.

Fosnaught finished second and Saxonburg's Wayne Carbo claimed third. Egley's win was his second at Lernerville this season.

Notes: There were 99 cars in the pits, including 30 Modifieds. … Ed Lynch Jr. had to tag the field in the Sprint feature after a fuel line problem forced him to the pits during his heat race. He finished eighth in the feature.
