PHILADELPHIA — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will hear cases today in historic Old City Hall in Philadelphia, where the U.S. Supreme Court once met. The court shared space with the Mayor’s Office in the 1790s, when Philadelphia was the capital of the United States.

The event marks Constitution Week and will be the session will be aired Monday on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.

The cases on the docket involve open records law, prison health and pharmaceuticals.

Diocese urges new plan for schoolsPITTSBURGH — The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is urging a grassroots reorganization of its 85 elementary schools, which continue to lose enrollment.Overall, the diocese has 96 schools with 22,000 students. Though its high schools and preschools have maintained steady enrollments, the church’s K-8 schools have not.The Rev. Kris Stubna serves as the diocese’s secretary for Catholic Education and said 16 listening sessions attended by about 1,000 people this year have shown parents and parishioners do not want a decision on whether to close or consolidate schools to come from the “top down.”As a result, Stubna said individual parishes and schools need to work together to come up with solutions for schools whose enrollments are dwindling.
