PALMYRA — A state police fire marshal says nothing criminal or illegal occurred at a central Pennsylvania fireworks display that went awry, injuring 11 people.

State police said Monday that the explosion in Palmyra was a tragic accident.

Trooper Michael Yeity says one firework exploded in its tube Sunday night, knocking over other fireworks that shot into the crowd. Three other minors and seven adults had to be treated for injuries ranging from burns to scrapes and bruises.

At least one person remains hospitalized following the mishap. Seventeen-year-old Tyler Weaver was transported to the burn unit of an eastern Pennsylvania hospital where he was scheduled to receive skin grafts on his leg today.

The accident happened during an Independence Day fireworks display at the Palmyra Middle School to mark the borough's 250th anniversary.

HARRISBURG — Electronic signs along Pennsylvania highways that warn drivers of accidents, traffic jams and construction could be pitching products if state officials get their way.Pennsylvania has joined California and Florida in asking the federal government to allow the sale of advertising on electronic highway signs to generate money to fix roads and bridges. The Patriot-News of Harrisburg says it has obtained an application indicating that states would contract with private companies to upgrade and maintain the electronic signs.The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says the advertising could generate $150 million annually for each state. But traffic safety advocates argue that the ads could distract drivers and pose a road hazard.

FAYETTEVILLE — Officials are blaming fireworks for a fire that displaced eight people in central Pennsylvania.Investigators say the blaze broke out early Monday morning when fireworks launched nearby landed on the lawn of the home in Fayetteville, about 45 miles southwest of Harrisburg.Authorities say the flames spread from the yard to the two-story home, gutting the structure.The fire forced five children and three adults from the home, but no injuries were reported.Police say they'll file charges if they can determine who set off the fireworks.

INDIANA — Authorities say a western Pennsylvania man has died in a tractor accident on his property.The Indiana County Coroner's Office says 86-year-old Clarence G. Graff was mowing his grass in Plumcreek Township in neighboring Armstrong County when the tractor overturned in a ditch and pinned him underneath just before 5 p.m. Saturday.Emergency crews pulled Graff from the wreckage and took him to the Indiana Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.Coroner Michael Baker says the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the chest.State police are investigating.
