PITTSBURGH — The outbound lanes of the Birmingham Bridge in Pittsburgh are closed while PennDOT inspectors search for clues to a possible structural problem.

PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi says crews haven't confirmed there is a problem with the bridge. The bridge connects Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood with the South Side and spans the Monongahela River.

The outbound lanes were closed after a worker reported possibly seeing the bridge deck shift at an expansion joint early today.

PennDOT says the outbound lanes will remain closed until engineers can confirm the bridge is safe.
