Geibel gets Mars II even in best-of-5
Tim Geibel homered and also struck out 10 as Mars II evened the best-of-five Eagle County League Championship Series with a 3-1 win over Mars in Game 2 Saturday afternoon.
Geibel’s homer, a two-run shot, came in the fourth inning to put Mars II up 2-1.
“Tim played one of the games of his life,” said Mars II manager Eric King. “He was great on the mound and had a big hit at the plate.”
Brendan Malone homered for Mars in the top of the fourth inning.
Trent Smith also doubled in a run for Mars II.
Mars led the first game of the series 5-0 early before Mars II rallied to cut the deficit to 5-4, but fell short.
King said he thought that momentum carried over into Saturday’s win.
“I knew our guys after the big comeback in Game 1 that fell a little short would come out with a lot of energy,” King said. “I knew we’d come out fighting.”
Game 3 is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at Marburger Field in Mars.
With the split in the first two games, the series has now been reduced to a best-of-three.
“That’s how we’re treating it,” King said. “We can just forget the first two games. Game 3 is the most important game right now.”
