MUDDY CREEK TWP - Moraine State Park will host the following programs through May at the park:

• "Volunteer Orientation & Work Day," 11 a.m. Saturday.

Explore the possibilities for volunteer service at McConnells Mill and Moraine state parks.

Meet the park naturalists at the former Marina Restaurant, just before the Davis Hollow Marina on the North Shore of Moraine State Park. Please call 724-368-8811 if you plan to attend.

• "Historic Oil Well Operation," 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 9.

See the abandoned turn-of-the-20th-century oil well and pumping engine that have been restored to working order. The central powerhouse site is beyond the forestry and regional office building on Park Road, Old Route 422, off of Route 528.

• "Bike and Learn," 1 p.m. May 9.

Join park staff at the bike rental station on the North Shore of Moraine State Park for a guided bike ride. Participants should take their own bicycle or contact the concessionaire at 724-368-9011 for rental information.

• "Endangered Species: What Can I Do?" 2 p.m. May 10.

Meet the park naturalist and volunteer Paul Wallenberger at McDanel's Launch Pavilion No. 7, on the North Shore of Moraine State Park.

• "Who Let the Dogs Out?" 10 a.m. May 16.

Join the park naturalist at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore of Moraine for a moderate two-mile hike followed by a doggie swim in Lake Arthur. Only friendly and vaccinated dogs allowed. Pets must be on a leash at all times.

• "The Amazing Osprey," 2 p.m. May 24.

Meet the park naturalist at the McDanel's Launch Pavilion No. 6, on the North Shore of Moraine, to learn about this creature.

• "Bike and Learn," 1 p.m. May 25.

Join park staff at the bike rental station on the North Shore of Moraine State Park for a guided bike ride. Participants can take their own bicycles or contact the concessionaire at 724-368-9011 for rental information. Dress for the weather and take water.

• "Native Garden Cleanup," 10 a.m. May 30.

Meet at the Moraine State Park office on the South Shore to dig in and learn to shape the garden up for summer.

• "Guide to Geocaching and GPS," 2 p.m. May 30.

Meet the park naturalist at the Pleasant Valley picnic area, on the South Shore of Moraine, to take part in some geocaching. Several GPS units will be available for participants to use.

• "Nature Watch Kayaking," 10 a.m. May 31.

This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy peaceful experience rather than a long hard paddle. Meet the park naturalist at the McDanel's launch area on the North Shore. Participants may take their own kayaks, or borrow one at the park. To reserve a kayak or to register, call 724-368-8811. Participants who use park kayaks must be at least 12 years old. An adult must accompany those participants younger than 18.

• "Scavenger Hunt at the Beach," 2 p.m. May 31.

Meet the park naturalist in front of the concession stand at Lakeview Beach on the North Shore to begin an adventure. Participants will be given a list of items to search for in the Lakeview area. Find all of the scavenger hunt items and win a prize.
