Rotary celebrates 100 years

On Feb. 23, Rotary International will celebrate its 100th anniversary. To mark that occasion, a Centennial Celebration is planned for June.

The celebration will take place June 18 through 22 in Chicago, where the first Rotary Club was formed. It will be at the McCormick Place Convention Center, according to the Rotary Web site.

The event will begin with a Rotary parade through Chicago. At the celebration itself, there will be speakers, workshops, exhibits, and activities.

Rotary clubs from around the world are celebrating by planning their own programs or projects. Some of them will be on display at the celebration.

In addition to the celebration, there are five Rotary Centennial Bells traveling the world right now, like the Olympic Torch. The bells started their journey in June 2003 at the last Rotary International Convention in Brisbane, Australia.

The traveling of the bells represents the inter-nationality of Rotary. One bell is traveling to the first 100 Rotary Clubs formed, according to the Web site.

In November, the bell made its way to Pennsylvania, stopping at the Rotary clubs of Erie, New Castle, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.

The other four bells are traveling to the first club in each Rotary country, one to each of four regions. These regions are Asia/Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.
