Specialized Staffing
Tim Guard questioned his hearing when he heard his wife say, "Honey, let's buy a building."
Lisa Guard, president of Specialized Staffing Inc. made that call while walking along Main Street returning from lunch one day in December 2002.
Knowing how impulsive she could be, Tim's first response upon realizing she was serious was, "You didn't sign anything did you?"
Only a few months later they closed on the property at 130 S. Main St. After months of interior renovation, in April 2004, the building became the home of Specialized Staffing, a recruiting and staffing firm specializing in professional and administrative positions, career coaching and transition management service.
"The grand opening was truly one of the most memorable days of our lives," said Lisa, who recalls the ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the mayor and many of her most admired fellow business associates and friends.
Lisa, who has built a successful business, which began in their home in 1997, is active in the community, recently completing her second term as chairwoman of the board of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. She has been elected vice chair of the Butler Downtown Revitalization Committee.
"It's easy to volunteer, even if you're already busy, for a cause you truly believe in," said Lisa, who admits she has to be passionate about something for it to really keep her interest.
"I believe our community has incredible potential and efforts are being made by a lot of very talented and resourceful people who are determined to see a vibrant, attractive and safe downtown."
The Guards are exploring and evaluating options for exterior renovations and look forward to future interior renovations of the second and third floors into upscale living space, a growing trend in cities large and small nationwide.
"Buying and renovating commercial space has certainly been a learning experience," they both said. But they are confident their investment in the community will prove to be a success.
