1 killed, 2 injured in early Sunday car crash
CHERRY TWP — A 19-year-old Clintonville man was killed early Sunday morning when the car he was driving went off Route 308 before hitting a pickup truck, state police said.
Ryan Michael Malachina, a standout athlete at Franklin High School where he graduated in the spring, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Butler County men in the pickup were taken to Pittsburgh hospitals, authorities said, for treatment of injuries not considered serious.
Police said Malachina was traveling north on Route 308 near Tinker Road about 2:10 a.m. when for an unknown reason his 2001 Chrysler Sebring went off the road while going around a slight bend.
He lost control of the car when he tried to steer it back onto the road about one-half mile south of Moniteau High School. The car went into the opposite lane and collided with a southbound 2006 Dodge Ram driven by Kevin L. Thompson, 32, of Chicora, police said.
The collision sent the pickup over a guardrail and down an embankment, where it ended on its passenger side and against a tree, rescuers said.
Morgan S. Pennington, 48, a passenger in the pickup, was pinned between his seat and the dashboard. But Thompson was able to get out.
"He walked about 1,000 feet to a home for help," said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to get Pennington out of the truck. He remained conscious the entire time.
Butler County Coroner William Young III pronounced Malachina dead of head and body injuries.
A Grove City native, Malachina celebrated his birthday earlier this month. He was a shift manager at a fast food restaurant in Barkeyville.
