Baby Bridge
This photograph shows the Freeport Bridge under construction on May 17, 1964. The bridge, which carries Route 356 over the Allegheny River and Buffalo Creek into Freeport, opened in 1965. On Aug. 2, the state Department of Transportation imposed a 3-ton weight limit on the structure after an inspection revealed it had deteriorated and 230 sections needed repairs, leading to a 20-mile detour for vehicles weighing more than 6,000 pounds. The Joseph B. Fay Co. of Pittsburgh was awarded a $3.03 million contract to repair the bridge. Repairs to the section over Buffalo Creek are due to be finished by Sept. 29, and the span over the Allegheny by Dec. 1.
