It's important for people to recognize the signs of a debt crisis and get help if they are experiencing the warning signs, according to Kristen Garrett of Advantage Credit Counseling Service.

She noted some signs of a debt crisis include falling behind on basic payments like mortgage payments, skipping some bills to pay others or using credit to buy items you should be able to buy with cash, like groceries.

As soon as people realize they are going to have trouble paying a bill, they should contact their creditors, Garrett said. Depending on each individual's situation and creditor policies, people may be able to negotiate their next payment or get a lower interest rate.

Those who feel overwhelmed by debt should also seek help from a reputable credit counseling agency.

Consumers should review credit counseling services carefully before choosing help and look for an agency that offers money management advice without forcing consumers into a debt management program.

Consumers should also ask the agency to explain all of their fees, services and national affiliations.

The main toll-free number for Advantage Credit Counseling is 888-511-2227. Calls to the branch offices are all routed through this number first. For those who would like an in-person session, the office is at 112 Hollywood Drive in Butler.

As a nonprofit agency, the majority of Advantage's services are offered free to the client, including credit counseling and budgeting sessions.

The service does receive some grant money and some reimbursement from the state for certain services. Clients who choose to enroll in a Debt Management Plan are charged an initial set-up fee and then a per month fee per creditor. There also is a charge for bankruptcy services.

Fees will be waived if it is determined they would pose a financial hardship for the client. The goal is to help people, not hinder them further, Garrett said.
