LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Splashing his way past Lion Heart in the stretch, Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Smarty Jones ran his record to 7-for-7 and became the first unbeaten Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977. Seattle Slew went on to win the Triple Crown.

Imperialism finished third.

NEWARK, N.J. - Rickey Henderson re-signed Sunday with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, where he played last season before returning to the majors.Henderson, 45, has the most runs (2,295), stolen bases (1,406) and walks (2,190) in major league history. The likely Hall of Famer excelled during 56 games with Newark last year, then joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in July.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tampa Bay Devil Rays consultant Syd Thrift announced his retirement Sunday after nearly 50 years in professional baseball.Thrift spent time in baseball operations with Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Oakland, the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore before joining the Devil Rays in February 2003.

DETROIT - Detroit captain Steve Yzerman is out indefinitely after undergoing 41/2 hours of surgery for a scratched cornea and broken bone just below his left eye.Yzerman is expected to make a full recovery, the Red Wings said in a statement Sunday, adding that he will be unavailable to comment for a week.Yzerman was hurt when he was hit in the face with a puck during Detroit's 1-0 loss to Calgary on Saturday night.

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - Jennifer Rosales shot a 7-under-par 65 for her first LPGA Tour victory Sunday, overcoming Annika Sorenstam, Grace Park and other more acclaimed players to win the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship.The 25-year-old Rosales finished at 14-under 274, one stroke ahead of Park (68), Rosie Jones (67), Becky Morgan (68) and Jung Yeon Lee (65).

NEW ORLEANS - Playing in his first tournament since winning the Masters, Phil Mickelson moved into position Sunday to make it two in a row at the HP Classic.Mickelson shot a 69 in the third round to move into a tie for second with Charles Howell III , two strokes behind leader Joe Ogilvie.
