Rob McClellan of Butler qualified Friday for the Frank B. Fuhrer Pennsylvania, which begins Aug. 9 at the Pittsburgh Field Club in Aspinwall.
McClellan, the pro at Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City, shot a 72, which was one stroke off the lead, at the Western Qualifier at Totteridge Golf Club near Greensburg.
Other Butler County golfers who competed but didn't qualify were Gene Walter of Saxonburg (79), Ken Waldron of Sarver (83), Corky Mowery of Renfrew (84) and George Bilowick of Butler (withdrew).
Bobby Swartwout of Meridian, a pitcher-first baseman with the Beaver Valley Baseball Amateur Athletics Union 11-and-under team, helped his squad to a fifth-place finish at the national tournament last week in Orlando, Fla.A total of 54 teams and about 600 players competed in the event, and Swartwout was one of 20 players selected for the all-tournament team.The Beaver Valley ended the season with a 47-6 record.
Matt Slamecka of Butler won the boys 12-year-old singles tennis championship at the Oxford Junior District Ranking Open Tournament Sunday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville.Slameca defeated Kevin Ricart of Erie, Bradley Portnoy and Julian Pearlman, both of Pittsburgh, to win the event.
Cameron Peterson, 16, of Grove City won the boys 15-and-16 division of the Kings Pepsi Tri-State PGA Junior Golf Tournament Monday at Cranberry Highlands Golf Club in Cranberry Township.Peterson carded a 36-34-70, the second-lowest score overall. Mike Van Sickle, 17, of Wexford carded a 67 to win the boys 17-and-18 division.
