NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Hubie Brown retired Thursday as coach of the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies due to health reasons.Grizzlies spokeswoman Stacey Mitch said the 71-year-old Brown did not have a serious illness, but declined to comment further.Assistant coach Lionel Hollins was named interim coach.Brown retired one day after the Grizzlies lost to the Seattle SuperSonics and fell to fourth place in the Southwest Division. He made no reference to retiring after the game.Brown was the oldest coach in the NBA when he returned to the league in 2002 after a 16-year break. He was the coach of the Atlanta Hawks from 1976-81 and the New York Knicks from 1982-86. In 1975, Brown led the Kentucky Colonels to the ABA championship.
INDIANAPOLIS - Minnesota Timberwolves center Michael Olowokandi was arrested after police used a stun gun to subdue him when he refused to leave a club.Olowokandi, 29, was taken into custody about 3 a.m. Thursday after he refused to leave Tiki Bob's, said Indianapolis Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Staletovich.He was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing, both misdemeanors, Staletovich said.Timberwolves general manager Jim Stack said in a statement that Olowokandi was suspended for Thursday's game against the Indiana Pacers for conduct detrimental to the team.Olowokandi was held overnight in an Indianapolis jail and released in the afternoon.
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - New York Jets general manager Terry Bradway Thursday received a two-year contract extension that will keep him in the organization through 2007.Bradway, in his fourth season with the team, had been criticized last year for allowing players to leave during free agency while not upgrading key positions.While coach Herman Edwards received an extension after the season, Bradway was put on hold. But he made some good moves in the draft and through free agency. The result has been a younger, faster team that is off to a 7-3 start with a shot at the playoffs heading into Sunday's game at Arizona.
TURIN, Italy - Police Thursday inspected documents at the headquarters of the organizing committee of the 2006 Winter Olympics as part of an investigation into possible financial irregularities.Organizing chief Valentino Castellani said his committee, known as TOROC, has acted "in full observance of the law" and was not being accused of wrongdoing.The action came while Castellani was in Lausanne, Switzerland, for a progress report to the International Olympic Committee.Investigators said they examined documents regarding TOROC's bookkeeping, and also confirmed that for now there was no accusation of any criminal offense.Police also inspected documents at the Rome offices of Italy's national Olympic committee as well as at its regional office in Turin.
