HUIXQUILUCAN, Mexico - Annika Sorenstam rallied to win her first LPGA Tour event of the year Sunday, shooting a 4-under 68 in windy conditions for a three-stroke victory in the inaugural MasterCard Classic.
Sorenstam had eight birdies to offset four bogeys in the strong wind on the high-altitude Bosque Real Country Club course.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Ernie Els made an 18-foot eagle putt on the final hole to beat Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Wales' Stephen Dodd by a stroke in the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.Els, the South African star who also won the tournament in 1994 and 2002, shot a 4-under 68 for a 19-under 269 total. Dodd closed with a 66, and Jimenez shot a 70. Scotland's Colin Montgomerie (69) was fourth at 16 under.
PHOENIX - Kurt Warner agreed Sunday to a one-year, $4 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals, the two-time MVP's third team in three seasons. The 33-year-old quarterback, who lost his starting job with the Giants to rookie Eli Manning last season, is to sign the contract and appear at a news conference in Arizona on Tuesday.Warner was a three-time Pro Bowl selection with the St. Louis Rams. But after losing the starting job to Marc Bulger in St. Louis, he signed a one-year deal with the Giants before last season.
NEW YORK - Disgruntled Redskins receiver Laveranues Coles was traded to the New York Jets on Saturday for receiver Santana Moss. The deal was contingent on both players passing physicals.Coles met with coach Joe Gibbs twice after the season to state his desire to leave the Redskins. In 2002, Coles emerged as a top receiver with the Jets. Though he had been given assurances he would be re-signed, the Jets failed to match the Redskins' seven-year, $35 million offer.
MEXICO CITY - Defending Busch Series champion Martin Truex Jr. held on after an early pit stop Sunday to win the first NASCAR points race outside the United States. Truex finished more than 6 seconds ahead of Nextel Cup regular Kevin Harvick in the Telcel-Motorola 200.
HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Dan Wheldon overpowered the field Sunday in the season-opening IRL IndyCar race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Wheldon dominated the Toyota Indy 300, leading 158 of the 200 laps.
Knoch graduate Chase Rowe went 2-for-4 with a home run and Colin Scott struck out eight and gave up just three hits in six innings of work as Slippery Rock University's baseball team crushed Stonehill College (Mass.) 12-2 Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.With the win, Rock coach Jeff Messer reached the 600-win plateau. He now owns a 600-339-4 career record.
