PHOENIX - George Mikan, the "gentile giant" who a half-century ago brought fame and stability to the fledgling world of professional basketball and literally transformed the game, has died 18 days shy of his 81st birthday.Mikan died Wednesday night at a Scottsdale rehabilitation center following a long fight with diabetes and kidney ailments. His right leg was amputated below the knee in 2000, and he had undergone kidney dialysis treatment three times a week for five years, son Terry said.The 6-10 Mikan led the Minneapolis Lakers to five league titles in the first six years of the franchise's history. Nearsighted with thick glasses, he was as rough on the court as he was mild-mannered off it. Mikan led the league in personal fouls three times and had 10 broken bones during his playing career. He averaged 23.1 points in seven seasons with Minneapolis before retiring because of injuries in 1956.
PARIS - Mary Pierce and Justine Henin-Hardenne will meet in the French Open final.Both former champions easily defeated Russian opponents. First, Henin-Hardenne beat Nadia Petrova 6-2, 6-3, and then Pierce won even more quickly, eliminating Elena Likhovtseva 6-1, 6-1.That set the stage for an appealing showdown Saturday between Pierce, who claims French citizenship, and Henin-Hardenne, who grew up in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Each seeks her second Roland Garros title.
OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland closer Octavio Dotel will have reconstructive elbow surgery as soon as possible.Dotel, who blew four saves in five outings from April 30 to May 11, had the elbow examined by Angels doctor Lewis Yocum and Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Andrews will perform the ligament replacement surgery.Dotel is 1-2 with seven saves and a 3.52 ERA, walking 11 in 15 1-3 innings.
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Troubled wide receiver Koren Robinson, who was suspended for substance abuse last season and faces drunken driving charges, was released Thursday by the Seattle Seahawks.Last season, Robinson served a four-game league suspension for substance abuse. In January, coach Mike Holmgren benched him for skipping practice one day before an important game against Atlanta.He pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Kirkland Municipal Court to drunken and reckless driving and is due back in court July 18.
