The Moniteau School Board on Monday accepted the resignation of Arnie Trufley as head baseball coach and approved the posting of the position.
The board also approved a list of athletic positions including Mark Yeager as head varsity girls basketball coach, Mark Kosick as head boys track coach and Sue Scialabba as head girls track coach.
Brian Minto's scheduled 10-round heavyweight boxing match vs. Jermell Barnes at the Butler Days Inn has been postponed until July.Minto (19-1) was slated to fight Barnes (17-8) June 28, but Barnes needs time to recover from a hand injury. The Butler Days Inn will still host the fight card, though the rescheduled date has not been announced.
WIMBLEDON, England - French Open winner Justine Henin-Hardenne ran out of comebacks Tuesday and lost in the first round at Wimbledon.The Belgian became the first Roland Garros women's champion since 1962 to lose her opening match at Wimbledon when she was beaten by Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 7-6 (8), 2-6, 7-5.Two-time champion Serena Williams, playing her first match since May 11, won the final five games to beat fellow American Angela Haynes 6-7 (12), 6-4, 6-2.The men's French Open champion, 19-year-old Rafael Nadal, wore his clamdigger trousers on Centre Court and beat American Vince Spadea 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.
SAN ANTONIO - A one-year increase in the minimum age was part of a new six-year collective bargaining agreement tentatively reached by NBA owners and players.Commissioner David Stern and union director Billy Hunter finalized the deal in principle in New York and immediately flew to the NBA Finals to announce it prior to Game 6 between San Antonio and Detroit. The agreement will replace the seven-year pact expiring June 30.Other facets of the new deal will make trades easier, increase pensions for retired players, impose harsher penalties on drug violators and offer teams the option of sending young players for minor-league seasoning.
CINCINNATI - The last-place Cincinnati Reds fired manager Dave Miley Tuesday and promoted bench coach Jerry Narron to finish the season.At 27-43, the Reds were 18½ games behind St. Louis in the NL Central. Pitching coach Don Gullett also was fired. Vern Ruhle, the Reds' minor league pitching coordinator, will handle the job for the remainder of the season.
LOS ANGELES - Dodgers closer Eric Gagne will have season-ending surgery to fix a sprained ligament in his right elbow.Gagne had a second MRI exam and doctors concluded he needs Tommy John surgery, the team said Tuesday. The All-Star reliever has a second-degree sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament and was recently placed on the 15-day disabled list.
