Mars High School junior Monica Glomb will head to the ASA National Softball Championships after her team, the Pittsburgh Patriots, turned in a strong performance at the Pennsylvania Championships in State College last weekend.

Glomb pitched a no-hitter and a two-hitter during the tournament.

The national tournament will be held in Georgia in August.

Jake Pleczkowski, 17, of Valencia won the boys 17-and-18 age division of the Kings Pepsi Tri-State PGA Junior Golf Tournament Thursday at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Connellsville.Pleczkowski fired a 30-42-72 to tie Ralph Boswell, 18, of Latrobe, but won the tournament on the second playoff hole.

Tim Bean, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker, has decided to transfer from Slippery Rock University to Geneva College.Bean, a graduate of Mars High School, will still have four years of eligibility remaining.

LEMONT, Ill. - Ben Curtis shot a bogey-free, 7-under 64 in the first round of the Western Open Thursday, finishing one stroke shy of the course record and grabbing a share of the lead with Jim Furyk and Todd Fischer.There are plenty of people right behind the 2003 British Open champion. Former Western Open champ Robert Allenby, Chad Campbell, Harrison Frazar and Chris Couch are two strokes back (66), and John Daly is lurking in a big pack at 2-under 69.Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh both struggled and have work to do to make the cut. Woods couldn't get the ball close to the pin all afternoon and finished at 2-over 73. Singh shot a 1-over 72.

SAN FRANCISCO -Texas Rangers pitcher Frank Francisco pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault Thursday and was sentenced to a work program and anger management classes.Francisco, 25, was accused of tossing a chair at an Oakland Athletics fan last Sept. 13.Superior Court Judge Michael Gaffey sentenced Francisco to 30 days in jail, which can be served in a work detail. Francisco received 10 days off for good behavior. Gaffey also ordered that Francisco attend 26 anger management cases, one class a week for six months, according to prosecutors.
