MONTREAL - Michael Phelps was left in the wake of the world's greatest sprinters at the World Swimming Championships Thursday, an also-ran in a thrilling 100-meter freestyle won by Italy's Filippo Magnini.

Magnini held off the South African duo of Roland Schoeman and Ryk Neethling, winning in a meet-record time of 48.12 seconds.

Phelps did win his third gold medal of the meet in one of his signature events, repeating as world champion in the 200 individual medley.

But that wasn't enough for the 20-year-old American to claim a starring role on this night - Poland's Otylia Jedrzejczak broke her own world record in the 200 butterfly - or shake off the perception of vulnerability.

TORONTO - Accepting a salary cap was the last thing Bob Goodenow did as head of the NHL players' union.One week after his union took a deal that included just about everything he had vowed to fight, Goodenow is out. He and the union reached a settlement Thursdy on the two years left on his contract.Ted Saskin, the union's senior director of business affairs and licensing, succeeds Goodenow as executive director and general counsel.

NEW YORK - The New York Yankees acquired pitcher Shawn Chacon from the Colorado Rockies Thursday for a pair of minor league pitchers, filling the remaining opening in their injury-ravaged rotation.New York sent Ramon Ramirez and Eduardo Sierra to Colorado for the 27-year-old right-hander, who will pitch this weekend.

MADISON, Wis. - Barry Alvarez said Thursday he will step down as the University of Wisconsin football coach after this season to focus solely on his role as the school's athletic director, a job he took on in 2004.His successor will be defensive coordinator Bret Bielema.Alvarez, 58, is the winningest coach in school history with a mark of 108-70-4 in 15 seasons. He is 7-3 in bowl games.

NEW YORK - The summer is over for Afleet Alex before it begins: The Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner has a left front leg injury that will keep him out of the Haskell Invitational and the Travers Stakes.The injury, a hairline condylar fracture, was discovered by trainer Tim Ritchey on Tuesday at Belmont Park after training. Afleet Alex could be ready to run again in the fall, Ritchey said.
