KARUIZAWA, Japan - American teenager Paula Creamer shot a 4-under 68 and held off Ai Miyazato - Japan's most popular player - to win the NEC Karuizawa tournament.

Creamer, who turned 19 earlier this month, finished at 19-under 197, three strokes ahead of Miyazato, who shot a 69.

WHEATON, Ill. - Jeff Overton gave the United States its first Walker Cup victory since 1997, beating Nigel Edwards 1-up in the deciding match in the Americans' 121/2-111/2 triumph over Britain and Ireland at Chicago Golf Club.

BALTIMORE - Four days after returning to the Baltimore Orioles following a 10-day suspension for steroid use, Rafael Palmeiro played baseball for the first time Sunday.He batted sixth as the designated hitter, which sheltered him from the 95 degree temperature and the heat of the fans at Camden Yards, many of whom booed when his name was announced during pregame introductions.Upon being suspended for steroid use on Aug. 1, Palmeiro, 40, insisted that he did not know how the drug got in his body. He has not addressed the topic since returning Thursday, saying that his attorneys advised him to refrain from comment until Congress concludes its investigation of his case.

SPARTA, Ky. - Former IRL champion Scott Sharp won for the first time in more than two years, holding off Vitor Meira on Sunday to win the Amber Alert Portal Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

DENVER - Defending champion Sebastien Bourdais took advantage of a late crash by Paul Tracy, then pulled away from the pack to win the Grand Prix of Denver on Sunday, his third straight victory and fourth of the season.

HELSINKI, Finland - The United States 1,600-meter relay team, anchored by 21-year-old Jeremy Wariner, raced to victory Sunday night, a record 14th gold medal for the United States in the nine-day competition.The team of Andrew Rock, Derrick Brew, Darold Williamson and Wariner won in 2 minutes, 56.91 seconds. The Bahamas was second at 2:57.32, followed by Jamaica in 2:58.07.Britain's Paula Radcliffe led almost from the start to win the marathon, the first worldwide triumph for the world record holder.Osleidys Menendez of Cuba was the third to set a world record at the meet, breaking her own javelin mark with a heave of 235 feet, 3 inches on her first attempt. She set the old mark of 234-8 in 2001.

CARSON, Calif. - Kim Clijsters defeated Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-1 in the JPMorgan Chase Open final Sunday for her WTA Tour-leading fifth title of the year.Clijsters improved to 31-1 in the United States since winning the season-ending WTA Championships in November 2003. That was three months after she earned the No. 1 ranking by winning the Carson tournament.

CHICAGO - Hasim Rahman unanimously outpointed friend Monte Barrett on Saturday night at the United Center to win the WBC interim heavyweight championship and keep his place at the front of the line to face Vitali Klitschko.Rahman (41-5, 33 knockouts) had said he wanted an early knockout, but was unable to catch Barrett (31-4, 17 KOs).
