AKRON, Ohio - Three days after the major championship season ended, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh played like they still have plenty to prove by taking a share of the lead in the NEC Invitational.Woods twice escaped trouble from the trees but never came close to making bogey on a Firestone course that offered no letup for those coming off the PGA Championship. He made a 15-foot birdie on his final hole for a 4-under 66, and later was joined by Singh and Henrik Stenson of Sweden.Singh had a chance to take the outright lead until missing a 6-foot birdie putt on his 17th hole. He had to scramble from the rough to save par on the 484-yard ninth hole for a share of the lead.Davis Love III carried his good play from Baltusrol into the first round and was among those at 67, while PGA champion Phil Mickelson was all smiles on his way to a 69.
RENO, Nev. - Defending champion Vaughn Taylor birdied six of his last eight holes for an 8-under par 64 and took a one-stroke lead over Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson and Reno's Todd Fischer in the windy first round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.Guy Boros was another stroke back at 6-under 66, followed by Aaron Baddeley, Jesper Parnevik and Duffy Waldorf at 67 on the 7,472-yard course at Montreux Golf and Country Club.Former British Open champion Todd Hamilton and Craig Barlow shot 68s. Among those at 69 were former British Open champ Ben Curtis, Joe Ogilvie, Jonathan Kaye and Paul Azinger, who splits his time in the broadcast booth. David Duval, another former British Open champ, shot a 10-over 82.
ST. LOUIS - Scott Rolen said he's been told he has a torn labrum that will require a six-month rehab. He wants to weigh his admittedly dismal options.Rolen, who had surgery on the shoulder after a May 10 collision with Dodgers first baseman Hee-Seop Choi, was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 22 when it became clear he was not progressing. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Tony Eury Jr. signed a long-term contract extension with Dale Earnhardt Inc., opening the possibility the crew chief will reunite next season with Dale Earnhardt Jr.Terms were not released for the deal, Eury's first contract in his 14 years with the company. Before this, he had always worked with a handshake agreement.By signing him to an official deal, DEI eliminated the chance Eury could leave with driver Michael Waltrip at the end of this season. The two were paired together this year in a wholesale swap of crews and equipment between Earnhardt and Waltrip. The swap was necessary because the relationship between Earnhardt and Eury, who are also cousins, had deteriorated to the point that the two were hardly speaking at the end of last season.
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jamie Bell went 3-for-4 and McLean, Va., beat Orange, Conn., 6-2 to win the Little League Softball World Series championship.Bell, the only holdover from last year's team that finished second, drove in two runs and scored another.Jilly Falle, the coach's daughter, earned the complete-game victory, allowing two unearned runs and eight hits. She worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting Cassie Slowik to ground out to end the game.
