IN BRIEF

Nathan Smith of Brookville, a member of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, advanced to the next round of the U.S. Amateur Championships Tuesday by shooting a 70 at Philadelphia Country Club for a two-day score of 143.

Smith is eight strokes off the pace set by James Lepp of Canada, whose 65 at the same course gave him a score of 135.

Fellow St. Jude member Sean Knapp of Oakmont wasn't as fortunate after his 69 at Philadelphia gave him a two-day total of 147 and forced him to miss the cut by one stroke.

Bennett Smith of Pittsburgh (78-77-155), grandson of Vernon Wise of Butler, also fell short of the cut.

CINCINNATI - Bob Huggins was ordered to resign as Cincinnati's basketball coach. In a letter faxed to his lawyer by the university Tuesday, Huggins was given 24 hours to resign and accept a financial compensation package worth almost $3 million. If he doesn't respond by 2 p.m. Wednesday, he will be fired, the letter said. The 51-year-old coach was traveling and had not seen the letter, lawyer Richard Katz said.Athletic director Bob Goin, one of Huggins' most loyal supporters over the years, said he backed the decision.

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers traded former NHL rookie of the year Dany Heatley to the Ottawa Senators for Marian Hossa Tuesday, a blockbuster deal requested by Heatley less than two years after he was blamed for a wreck that killed a teammate. The teams swapped high-scoring right wingers on the same day Hossa agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract with the Senators, avoiding salary arbitration. The 24-year-old Heatley combined with Ilya Kovalchuk to give the Thrashers two of the NHL's most prized young players. Hossa led the Senators with 36 goals and 46 assists in 2003-04, the last season before the lockout.
