Nathan Smith of Brookville, a member of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, lost in the second round of match play in the U.S. Amateur Thursday at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Smith fell to J.C. Deacon 3 and 2.

The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team was named the preseason favorite to win the PSAC West.The Rock is two-time defending regular-season champion and returns 11 players from last year's 13-3-2 squad.SRU has earned a playoff berth in four of the past five seasons.In other conference preseason polls, SRU men's soccer is picked to finish fifth while the volleyball and field hockey teams are projected for last.

Justin Mullen, a 5-foot-10 guard from CCAC-South, has joined the Slippery Rock University men's basketball program.Mullen led Peabody High School to three consecutive City League championships and scored 1,098 points in his high school career. He was an all-conference player twice for CCAC-South.

Ron Milanovich of St. Jude Golf Club fired a 2-under par 70 to put him in second place in the first round of the Tri-State Section PGA Super Senior Championship at Beaver Lakes Country Club in Aliquippa Thursday.Ropy Vucinich of Allegheny Country Club leads the two-day event with a 69. John Aubrey Sr. is in a five-way tie for fourth with a 73.

BALTIMORE - Sidney Ponson is in legal trouble again after being arrested on a drunken-driving charge.The Baltimore Orioles pitcher, who started the 2004 season as the team's ace, was arrested early Thursday. It's the latest alcohol-related legal problem for Ponson, who was charged in January with driving under the influence in Florida - a case that has not yet been resolved.That arrest came less than a month after he spent 11 days in an Aruban jail following a Christmas Day fight at a beach in his native country. He apologized for the fight and reached a settlement that involved community service and a charitable contribution.Ponson's arrest Thursday stunned an organization that in January 2004 signed the right-hander to a three-year, $22.5 million contract.
