Irish extend Weis contract
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis signed a new 10-year contract Saturday that will keep him as the Irish coach through the 2015 season.
Weis, whose No. 9 Fighting Irish are off to a 5-2 start this season, signed a six-year contract that ran through 2010 when he was hired last December.
TAMPA. Fla. — Al Lopez, catcher and manager who led the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox to American League pennants in the 1950s, died Sunday at 97.Lopez had been hospitalized in Tampa since Friday, when he suffered a heart attack at his son's home, Al Lopez Jr. said. He was the oldest living Hall of Fame member.
LOS ANGELES — Paul DePodesta was fired as general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.Team owner Frank McCourt cited the team's lack of success as the reason DePodesta was let go.McCourt hired DePodesta after buying the team in January 2004. The Dodgers won the NL West title in his first season, but DePodesta riled fans by trading popular catcher Paul Lo Duca and two other players at midseason.
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves named Roger McDowell their pitching coach on Saturday, replacing Leo Mazzone.McDowell, who pitched for 12 years in the major leagues, was pitching coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate at Las Vegas the past two seasons.Mazzone left the Braves after more than 15 years as pitching coach to take a lucrative, three-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles.
BATON ROUGE, La. — New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson swatted at a New Orleans television station's camera on Sunday and got into an argument with a fan.The WWL-TV camera crew said Benson lunged at them when they filmed him leaving the Saints game and that the owner then got into a shouting match with a fan. Video of the confrontation shows Benson bringing a raised hand down on the top of the camera before he is eased away from the camera crew, which continued filming.Benson could not be reached for comment.
NEW YORK — Saint Liam came through in the Breeders' Cup Classic and probably wrapped up Horse of the Year honors Saturday at Belmont Park with a stirring victory in America's richest race.Taking the lead at the top of the stretch, Saint Liam held off the challenge of Flower Alley and gave Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey his fifth win in the Classic and 15th victory in the Breeders' Cup.
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Carl Pettersson saved par with a tough chip on the 15th hole and made a clutch putt on the 16th for an even-par 71 to win the Chrysler Championship for his first PGA Tour victory.Chad Campbell made five birdies on the back nine in a terrific charge, including a 12-foot putt that swirled into the cup on the 18th hole for a 67 that left Pettersson no room for error.Leading by one shot, Pettersson found the middle of the fairway and hit his approach 20 feet by the cup. Trying to nestle the ball close to the hole, he ran it 3 feet by, but made that for par.
