Nikki Presto, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Thomas Jefferson High School, and Colleen Smith, a 6-0 post player from Madison, Ohio, have signed letters of intent with the Slippery Rock University women's basketball program.

Presto is a four-year starter at Thomas Jefferson and averaged 12 points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals as a junior last year.

Smith averaged 12 points, six rebounds and four assists last year, earning a berth in the Ohio Girls Basketball Report Top 64 Showcase.

Julie Wills scored 19 points and Shannon Onderko added eight points and six steals as the Butler County Community College women's basketball team downed Penn State-New Kensington, 66-53 Tuesday night.The Pioneers are now 5-1 on the season.

ROME — The Olympic flame arrived in Italy Wednesday, a little more than two months before the Turin Winter Games begin.The flame will be taken later today to the presidential Quirinal Palace. On Thursday, Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi will pass the flame to the first torchbearer in Italy — Stefano Baldini, the marathon winner at last year's Summer Games in Athens — as the flame starts a relay that will end at the opening ceremony in Turin on Feb. 10.

LOS ANGELES — Former Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little was hired Tuesday to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers.Little managed the Red Sox from 2002-03, compiling a 188-136 record. He was second-guessed for leaving starting pitcher Pedro Martinez in too long in Game 7 of the 2003 AL championship series, which the New York Yankees won in 11 innings.

DALLAS — First baseman John Olerud, a soft-spoken former batting champion and two-time All-Star, retired Tuesday after 16 seasons, the Boston Red Sox said.Olerud, 37, was a .295 career hitter with 255 home runs and 1,230 RBIs in 2,234 games.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Tiger Woods won the PGA Tour player of the year award for the seventh time in his nine full seasons, the final prize in a year that featured two major championships among his six tour titles.It was the fifth time Woods has swept the three major awards — the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as player of the year, the Arnold Palmer Award for leading the money list and the Byron Nelson Award for having the lowest scoring average.

PHILADELPHIA — Running back Brian Westbrook will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, the fourth Pro Bowl player the Philadelphia Eagles have lost for the season in the last month.Westbrook hurt his foot in the first half of Monday night's 42-0 loss to Seattle. An MRI confirmed he has a Lis Franc sprain.Westbrook joins quarterback Donovan McNabb (sports hernia), cornerback Lito Sheppard (ankle) and left tackle Tra Thomas (back) on the injured list.
