MIAMI — The cost-cutting Florida Marlins finalized their big trade with the Mets Thursday, sending slugger Carlos Delgado to New York for first baseman Mike Jacobs and two minor leaguers.
Just hours later, the Marlins completed the other big deal they struck this week by shipping ace Josh Beckett, third baseman Mike Lowell and reliever Guillermo Mota to the Boston Red Sox for four prospects.
The Mets will also receive $7 million from the Marlins to help cover the $48 million Delgado is owed over the next three seasons. The minor leaguers going to Florida in that deal are pitcher Yusmeiro Petit and infielder Grant Psomas.
The Marlins, who won their second World Series title only two years ago, will also receive Hanley Ramirez, Boston's top shortstop prospect, along with minor league pitchers Anibal Sanchez and Jesus Delgado.
KOCHI, Japan — Michelle Wie bogeyed her final two holes and missed the cut against the men by one stroke at the Casio World Open today.Wie, who shot a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, had three birdies and six bogeys at the Kochi Kuroshio Country Club course for a 3-over 75. She was tied with 11 others for 68th place with a 36-hole total of 4-over 148.Four players, including overnight co-leader Toshimitsu Izawa, were tied for the lead at 6-under-138.
DAVIE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau is out for the season with a calf injury, but said Thursday he plans to return for a 17th season in 2006, even if it's with another team.Seau played the past three games knowing there was a chance he could rupture his Achilles' tendon because of the calf injury, which began bothering him in September.He was placed on injured reserve after he underwent an MRI exam.
MELBOURNE, Australia — Hiroyuki Tomita became the first Japanese gymnast in more than 30 years to win an all-around title at the world championships Thursday.Tomita, who helped Japan win its first team gold since 1976 at last year's Athens Olympics, is his country's first gymnast to win the world all-around title since Shigeru Kasamatsu in 1974.He finished with a final score of 56.698. Compatriot Hisashi Mizutori finished second with 55.349, and Denis Savenkov of Belarus was third with 55.112.
FINGAL, Australia — Robert Allenby increased his lead to four strokes, shooting an even-par 72 Friday in the second round of the Australian Open.Allenby, who fired a course-record 63 in the opening round at Moonah Links, remained at 9-under 135.Adam Scott shot a 73 and was four shots off the pace at 5-under.
