NEW YORK — Outfielder Tike Redman's contract was purchased by the New York Mets on Monday from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 28-year-old Redman hit .251 in 319 at-bats last season with 20 doubles, two homers and 26 RBIs. He made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 2000 and has a .277 career average, 15 homers and 101 RBIs in 392 games.

Redman was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Nov. 19, which meant the team had 10 days to place him on waivers, trade him or send him outright to the minors.

PHILADELPHIA — Sean Landeta, the second-leading punter in NFL history, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.The 43-year-old Landeta begins his second stint with the Eagles and his 21st season in the league. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Landeta joined the NFL as a free agent with the New York Giants in 1985.

ATHENS, Ohio — Ohio coach Frank Solich was convicted of drunken driving, two days after police spotted him slumped over the wheel of his vehicle.Solich, in his first season with the Bobcats, pleaded no contest and was ordered to complete a three-day driver intervention program. He also had his license suspended for 180 days and was fined $250.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon will defend his Indy Racing League championship with a new team.Target Chip Ganassi Racing said it has signed Wheldon, who won the IRL title with Andretti Green Racing last season.Wheldon will join Ganassi driver Scott Dixon, the IRL's 2003 champion.

PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Arlen Specter accused the National Football League and the Philadelphia Eagles of treating Terrell Owens unfairly and said he might refer the matter to the antitrust subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he chairs.Specter said at a news conference Monday in Harrisburg it was "vindictive and inappropriate" for the league and the Eagles to forbid the all-pro wide receiver from playing and prevent other teams from talking to him."It's a restraint of trade for them to do that, and the thought crosses my mind, it might be a violation of antitrust laws," Specter said, though some other legal experts disagreed.The Eagles suspended Owens on Nov. 5 for four games without pay for "conduct detrimental to the team, and deactivated him with pay on Sunday after the suspension ended.
