PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins reassigned goaltender Dany Sabourin to their Wilkes-Barre farm club Thursday after he gave up goals on the first two shots he faced in a 6-1 loss in Columbus.
Sabourin was lifted after allowing four goals on 14 shots in slightly more than one period of play Wednesday night. He was recalled from Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day, after the Penguins learned goalie Jocelyn Thibault may miss the rest of the season with an injured hip.
The 25-year-old Sabourin is 15-1-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average at Wilkes-Barre of the AHL this season.

CINCINNATI — Carson Palmer's knee injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," but his surgeon said Thursday that he is optimistic the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback can play next season.Palmer tore ligaments in his left knee after being hit on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.The team announced that he had torn the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. The damage was much more severe, but Dr. Lonnie Paulos said surgery went well and Palmer could be ready for the regular season.
HONOLULU — Michelle Wie knocked herself out of contention at the Sony Open Thursday, making three double bogeys for a 42 on the front and making only one birdie in a windy round that gave her a 9-over 79.The 16-year-old high school junior, playing for the third straight year in the Sony Open, was trying to become the first female in 61 years to make the cut on the PGA Tour. But her fourth start on the tour became her highest score.Rory Sabbatini birdied five of his last seven holes for a 5-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead over David Toms, K.J. Choi, Charles Warren and Jeff Gove.
LOS ANGELES — Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush is skipping his senior season at Southern California to enter the NFL draft.The announcement Thursday came a day after running mate LenDale White made his decision to leave early and turn pro.Bush is expected to be one of the first players taken in the draft — with many projecting him going to the Houston Texans with the No. 1 pick.Bush had 1,740 yards rushing and 2,890 all-purpose yards this season for the Trojans, who fell short of an unprecedented third national title when they lost 41-38 to Texas in the Rose Bowl.

LOUIS — Sasha Cohen easily won the short program Thursday at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.Cohen had 65.15 points, 6.04 better than Emily Hughes.Cohen is well positioned for Saturday's free skate — and the one guaranteed spot on the U.S. Olympic team.Johnny Weir won the men's short program with a personal-best 83.28 points.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mike McCarthy was hired Thursday as coach of the Green Bay Packers, who hope the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator can revive a team coming off its worst season in 15 years.McCarthy replaces Mike Sherman, who was fired Jan. 2 after a 4-12 season.The 42-year-old McCarthy, who received a three-year deal, was the Packers' quarterbacks coach in 1999.
WENGEN, Switzerland — Bode Miller apologized Thursday for his comments about skiing and drinking during a televised interview, regretting the "confusion and pain" he caused his supporters.The apology came after the overall World Cup champion spoke to U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association president and chief executive Bill Marolt. The USSA was swamped with angry phone calls from team donors and corporate sponsors after Miller said during a "60 Minutes" profile on CBS that it's not easy "to ski when you're wasted."
