BRADENTON, Fla. — Outfielder Jody Gerut was sent to the minors as the Pittsburgh Pirates settled Friday on their 25-man roster, an unexpected demotion that created an opening day roster spot for center fielder Nate McLouth.The Pirates also set former Brewers right-hander Victor Santos as one of the five members of their season-opening rotation, barring a late trade. Santos beat out former Phillies and Astros pitcher Brandon Duckworth, who was reassigned to the minor league camp.Also sent to the minor league camp were two nonroster pitchers, left-hander C.J. Nitkowski and right-hander Terry Adams — moves that left rookie right-handed reliever Matt Capps on the team.Right-hander Bryan Bullington (shoulder surgery) was placed on the 60-day disabled list to create a 40-man roster spot for utilityman Jose Hernandez, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Indianapolis. Hernandez played previously for Pirates manager Jim Tracy while with the Dodgers and has seemed certain of making the roster for weeks.Gerut, who hit 22 homers for the Indians in 2003, is recovering from reconstructive knee surgery two seasons ago. He hit .349 this spring with 10 hits in his final 22 at-bats, only to be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
PITTSBURGH — Running back Verron Haynes re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, agreeing to a two-year contract.Haynes, a five-year veteran, ranked third on the Steelers last season with a career-best 274 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 74 carries.
INDIANAPOLIS — North Carolina coach Roy Williams and Duke guard J.J. Redick were selected the coach and national player of the year Friday by The Associated Press.Redick was second in the nation in scoring this season, capping his career as the Atlantic Coast Conference's all-time leading scorer and Division I's most prolific 3-point shooter.Williams, who won the award in 1992 at Kansas, is the second coach to win it at two schools, joining Eddie Sutton, who won at Arkansas in 1978 and Kentucky in 1989. He is the seventh coach to win it more than once.
VIENNA, Austria — The former Austrian ski coach who fled the Turin Olympics after a doping raid sued International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge for defamation.The lawsuit filed by Walter Mayer Friday came two days after lodging a similar suit against World Anti-Doping Agency chief Dick Pound.
