RIMERSBURG — Union girls basketball players Bethany Koch and Andrea Mortimer recently were named to the Class A all-state third team.
Both seniors, Koch and Mortimer shared District 9 Player of the Year honors after averaging 17.3 and 16.8 points, respectively in leading the Damsels to a 29-2 record and the state semifinals.
NATRONA HEIGHTS — Another day, another perfect game for Mars' Monica Glomb.The junior softball pitcher tossed her second gem in three games, striking out 17 en route to a 5-0 win at Highlands Tuesday.Her coach, Michele Goodworth, said she has never seen anything like this."She's very dominant right now," Goodworth said.In her two perfect games, the first a win against Butler Thursday, she has struck out 30 batters."Even today she said all of her pitches are working great," Goodworth said.Brie Berkopec had two doubles and Kelsey Schroth added a single for the Planets.
HOUSTON — Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery this weekend on his broken left foot and the injury could take four to six months to heal, general manager Carroll Dawson said.The 7-foot-6 Yao was hurt in the first quarter of an 85-83 loss to Utah on Monday.
CHICAGO — National League batting champion Derrek Lee signed a five-year $65 million deal with the Chicago Cubs Tuesday.The new contract calls for a $13 million annual salary from 2006-10 and contains a no-trade clause. Lee hit .335 with 46 homers and 107 RBI last year while winning a Gold Glove at first base.
