PHOENIX — Federal agents tried to pressure Jason Grimsley into wearing a wire during private conversations with other players to gather incriminating evidence against Barry Bonds, an attorney for the former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher said Thursday.

Edward Novak told the Arizona Republic "it was a specific effort to target Bonds and that "Jason's cooperation was necessary to their case."

Novak also told the newspaper that Grimsley denied volunteering names of fellow players, as reported in court documents released Tuesday. Instead, federal agents asked Grimsley what he knew about the illegal drug habits of specific athletes.

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Nicole Castrale had three birdies in a four-hole span and shot a career-low 64 that gave her a two-shot lead in the LPGA Championship.She picked up three of her birdies from inside 100 yards, including her string on the back nine at Bulle Rock. She chipped to 4 feet on the par-5 15th, hit a sand wedge to a foot on the next hole, and choked up on an 8-iron for an approach into 8 feet on the 18th.
