Sprinter Jones fails drug test
Five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones, once the charming, dominating face of track and field around the world, failed an initial drug test at the U.S. championships in June, people familiar with the results told The Associated Press.
Jones' "A" sample tested positive June 23 for the banned performance enhancer EPO at the event in Indianapolis, one source told the AP on condition of anonymity because the official results are not yet public.
If a second, or "B" sample, also tests positive, one of the biggest stars of the Sydney Olympics would face a minimum two-year ban from competition.

MONTREAL — Martina Hingis held off fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova Friday for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup.Hingis, the former No. 1 in the world and seventh seed, advanced to a semifinal on Saturday against 19-year-old Russian Anna Chakvetadze, a 7-6 (3), 7-5 winner over Shahar Peer of Israel.The 25-year-old Hingis was the dominant player on the WTA tour in the late 1990s, taking three of the four grand slam tournaments in 1997. She left the tour after the 2002 campaign with chronic foot problems before returning to the Tour this season and climbing to No. 12 in the rankings.
