CRANBERRY TWP — John Galeza and Victoria Angresano won the men's and women's singles titles, respectively, at the fourth annual Cranberry Township Open Tennis Championships recently.
The event, held at Community Park, was sponsored by the Cranberry Township Parks and Recreation Department.
Angresano defeated Janet McKinney in the women's singles final, Galeza defeated Jim Jen in the men's finals and Galexa teamed with Robert Zacharski to defeat Alan Ho and Jim Karn in the men's doubles finals.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The FCAGems competitive cheerleading organization, based in Sarver, captured nine first-place finishes at the Cheerpower regional Sunday at Slippery Rock University's Morrow Field House.The Rubies (senior level 4) also won the high point trophy for levels 3 to 5. The Sapphires (junior level 2) also won the high point trophy for levels 1 and 2.
FRANKLIN — The Pennsylvania Game Commission will release ring-necked pheasants throughout the Northwest Region, which includes Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties, this week.Here is the breakdown of released pheasants per county:• Butler: 1,400• Lawrence: 1010• Mercer: 1020• Venango: 820Regular pheasant season begins Saturday and runs through Nov. 25. CHICAGO — Lou Piniella's coming to Wrigley Field, agreeing to a three-year contract to manage the Chicago Cubs and accepting a job that has long been one of the most challenging in baseball.Piniella, who will be introduced today at a news conference, has a deal that is worth about $10 million.Piniella replaces Dusty Baker, another veteran manager with a strong resume, who left after four years when his contract was not renewed following a 66-96 last-place finish in the NL.
SIMI VALLEY, Calif — The Butler County golf team of John Aubrey Sr., Jon Pratkanis, Greg Loverick, Frank Rice and Craig Hladik finished second in the $1 Million World Scramble recently.The team shot a 33-under-par 111 for 36 holes. The first-place team was from Tampa, Fla., and shot a 108.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Ken Macha was fired as manager of the Oakland Athletics Monday, two days after the West champions were swept out of the playoffs by Detroit.The A's did not announce a replacement. Bench coach Bob Geren was considered a top candidate.Oakland went 368-280 in his four seasons as manager, but has frustrated management and fans by failing to get into the World Series.
