SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Sammy Sosa began training in hopes of returning to the major leagues.

Sosa hit the ball out of the park 15 times Thursday while training at a field in San Pedro de Macoris that is operated by the Japanese Central League's Hiroshima Carp.

The 38-year-old slugger said he had received calls from teams interested in signing him but declined to reveal their names.

He has not played since his 2005 season with the Baltimore Orioles, when he hit .221 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was cleared to play in the Alamo Bowl.McCoy's status was in doubt after he severely pinched a nerve in his neck in the final minute of a 12-7 loss to Texas A&M on Nov. 24.The Longhorns will face Iowa Dec. 30 in San Antonio.McCoy, a redshirt freshman, set a school record this season with 27 touchdown passes. He passed for 2,262 yards and threw seven interceptions this season.He led the Longhorns to eight straight wins before he hurt his neck the first time on the first drive of a 45-42 loss at Kansas State on Nov. 11.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — NL championship series MVP Jeff Suppan has been offered a four-year contract by the Milwaukee Brewers.Brewers officials met with free-agent Suppan and his agent, Scott Leventhal, Tuesday in the Los Angeles area and made a formal offer Wednesday.On Wednesday, Suppan and Leventhal met with New York Mets officials, who dined the previous night with Barry Zito and his agent, Scott Boras. Zito is likely to reach an agreement before Suppan.

SAN FRANCISCO — A lawyer who worked for BALCO founder Victor Conte is being investigated by the FBI as the source of leaked federal grand jury testimony in the steroids case, according to a Yahoo.com report Thursday.Private investigator Larry McCormack, who worked for Conte in the early stages of the BALCO case, told the FBI that defense lawyer Troy Ellerman gave the confidential information to a San Francisco Chronicle reporter in 2004, Yahoo.com reported.
