LEXINGTON, Ky. — Former Texas A&M men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie will succeed Tubby Smith at Kentucky, agreeing to a seven-year contract with the school.

Gillispie becomes Kentucky's sixth coach in the last 76 years. He is 100-58 in five seasons as a coach. In his last three years with the Aggies, he molded a longtime also-ran into a Big 12 power. Texas A&M went 27-7 this season.

Smith bolted to Minnesota two weeks ago after 10 seasons with four years left on his contract.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior Andi Rose was PSACWomen's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the second season in a row.She won the 55-meter hurdles individual championship with a meet record time of 8.15 seconds. She placed second to SRUteammate Vera McDaniel in the 55 meters and 200 meters.For the 11th time in his career, Rock coach John Papa was named PSACIndoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. He guided SRUto its first-ever conference indoor track title.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State assistant Frank Martin will be the Wildcats' new men's basketball coach, succeeding Bob Huggins.It will be Martin's first Division I head coaching job.The 40-year-old Martin was an assistant at Cincinnati for two years, one under Huggins and one under Andy Kennedy, before joining Huggins in Manhattan.

A month after he was released by the NFL's Houston Texans, quarterback David Carr Friday agreed to a two-year deal to play for the Carolina Panthers.Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will serve as Jake Delhomme's backup.Carr was a five-year starter for the expansion Texans. He completed 60 percent of his passes, but threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times.

NEW YORK — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has established a six-member council of veteran players to advise him on a variety of issues, including player conduct.Most of the players named to the council, which includes players union president Troy Vincent, met this week with Goodell on the same day the commissioner heard from Adam "Pacman" Jones of Tennessee and Chris Henry of Cincinnati to discuss their off-field problems. He is expected to announce disciplinary action next week.It will meet regularly with Goodell and Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association to talk about a variety of issues, including player safety, health issues and competition.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Andy Roddick and James Blake gave the United States a 2-0 lead over Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals Friday.Playing just over a week after straining his left hamstring, Roddick beat Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-4 on the fast, indoor hard court. In the first match of the best-of-five event, Blake broke out of his slump to beat Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.Sweden, playing at home, led 2-0 over Argentina. In the two other quarterfinals, Germany led Belgium 2-0, and France and Russia were tied 1-1.
