BOSTON — Robert Cheruiyot won the Boston Marathon for the third time Monday, defending his title in the remnants of a soaking nor'easter in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds. Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva captured the women's race in 2:29:18.
Cheruiyot, who also won in 2003 and set the course record last year, outkicked countryman James Kwambai as they headed into Kenmore Square with a mile to go. And the defending champion kept his feet under him as he crossed the finish line.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Boo Weekley didn't blow his latest chance for a first PGA Tour victory Monday, chipping in on the final two holes to hold off Ernie Els and win the Verizon Heritage.Weekley looked as if he would give back all of a three-shot lead after his bogey on the 16th hole and his muffed chip behind the 17th green. Weekley followed the blunder with a 40-foot, par-saving chip to keep a one-stroke lead.Weekley finished with a 68 and was one in front of Ernie Els (70) and two ahead of Stephen Leaney (68). Masters champion Zach Johnson continued his inspired play a week after slipping on the green jacket with a 71 to finish sixth.
The North Pittsburgh Basketball Club's seventh-grade AAU team — featuring Nate Snodgrass and Jake Hilliard of Butler — won the 33-team Solon (Ohio) Cage Classic last weekend.Snodgrass was named to the tournament's first-team all-star squad.
Seneca Valley graduate and Ohio Northern University freshman Tina Mangola recently broke the school's softball single-season record for home runs.Mangola, a native of Cranberry Township, now has eight this season.
