Grove City graduate Lyndsi Hughes and Cranberry Township resident Melissa Yeck played key roles in the Pittsburgh Passion's 34-6 NWFAquarterfinal victory over the West Michigan Mayhem Saturday night at Cupples Stadium.Hughes rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Yeck figured in on 16 tackles.The Passion (10-0) host the Cleveland Fusion in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Cupples Stadium. The winner advances to the league title game July 21 in Nashville, Tenn.
Butler Country Club's Robert McClellan and three other players finished in fourth place at the Two Best Ball out of Four tournament, held Monday at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex.The team shot a two-round score of 134, three strokes behind a foursome from Ligonier Country Club.McClellan's teammates included Earl Mowery, John Buckner and William Hunter.
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers have signed No. 1 pick Greg Oden.According the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, Oden's deal will be for two years, with team options for the third and fourth seasons. Oden will make $3.885 million as a rookie and $4.176 in Year 2. If they pick up the option in the third year, his salary will be $4.476 million.Oden, a 7-foot center from Ohio State, immediately started working out with the other players on Portland's summer league roster, impressing teammates with his powerful dunks and ability to block shots.
WIMBLEDON, England — Serena Williams managed to gut out a three-set victory at Wimbledon against an opponent who helped by fading right along with the daylight.Williams crumpled to the grass in the second set with a left calf injury Monday, was treated on court, then kept on playing, barely able to move. Given a reprieve by a nearly two-hour rain delay, Williams returned to compete, over her mother's protests.And she won, prolonging her bid for a third title at the All England Club by getting past No. 10-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal showdown against No. 1 Justine Henin.
