PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers rookie outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley didn't practice again Friday because of a sore hamstring and won't play Sunday against the New York Jets.
The Steelers declared Woodley out after he was unable to practice all week.
Woodley, the team's second-round draft pick this year, has played mostly on special teams in recent games. He has nine tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble, but has not had a sack in the last three games.
Hanna Leisie, Taylor Troyan and Taylor Kovach earned special awards recently for their efforts on the Butler Middle School girls soccer team.Leisie received the Offensive MVPAward after she scored four goals on the year. Goalkeeper Troyan stopped 349 of 379 shots to receive the Defensive MVPAward. Kovach received the Golden Tornado Pride Award.
ATLANTA — The Braves made an offer to pitcher Tom Glavine Friday, moving quickly to lock up a deal that will allow the left-hander to finish his career in Atlanta.Just two days after meeting with Glavine's agent in Phoenix, Braves general manager Frank Wren proposed a contract to the 41-year-old pitcher, who likely will command somewhere between $8 million and $10 million for the 2008 season.The two sides seem to be moving smoothly toward a deal that would allow Glavine to return to the Braves.Glavine, a 300-game winner, turned down a $13 million option to return to the New York Mets for a sixth year.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Annika Sorenstam's worst year since she was a rookie offered one last hope in the ADT Championship Friday when she was among three players desperate to claim the last two spots in the chase for $1 million.Sorenstam was eliminated in a 3-for-2 playoff at Trump International, ending her year without a victory for the first time since 1994.Just not for the weekend, where the 16 players who advanced to Saturday will start the third round with their scores wiped clean.Ai Miyazato of Japan saved par with a 7-foot putt on the 17th hole in the playoff, and two-putted from 35 feet on the 18th hole for par to secure one spot. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A local investor group trying to buy the Nashville Predators reached an agreement with city officials on changes to the arena lease Friday.In the deal Mayor Karl Dean said the team would be required to stay in Nashville for five years or it would have to pay back the city its investment in the operations of the Sommet Center.The agreement must still must be approved by the Metro Sports Authority and city council. The proposed $193 million purchase of the team must be approved by the NHL's Board of Governors.The group came together to make an offer to owner Craig Leipold after he originally announced a deal to sell his team in May to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie for $220 million. But the deal fell through in June when the co-CEO of Blackberry makers Research in Motion Ltd. started taking season-ticket deposits in Hamilton, Ontario.
