WASHINGTON — The Pittsburgh Penguins finally learned who their opponent will be after the Philadelphia Flyers finally figured out how to put away the Washington Capitals.
Joffrey Lupul netted a rebound during a power play 6:06 into overtime in Game 7 to lift Philadelphia past Alex Ovechkin and Washington 3-2 on Tuesday night in their NHL Eastern Conference first-round series.
The Flyers led the best-of-seven series 3-1.
With the Philadelphia win, the Penguins will face the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the conference semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Mellon Arena. The Flyers will play Montreal.
PITTSBURGH — Paul Benson, 16, of the Butler Cubs won a unanimous decision over Melvin Calloway of Steel Valley to win the 201-plus-pounds class of the subnovice category at the Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves championships Monday at the Pittsburgh Hilton.Since Benson is a subnovice, which means he has fewer than five fights, he won't advance to the state competition.
