NEW YORK — Derek Jeter hit a solo homer in the fifth inning against Tampa Bay on Sunday, tying Lou Gehrig for the most career hits at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter connected against David Price for his 1,269th hit at the ballpark, which is in its final season. The crowd roared as the New York captain rounded the bases after his opposite-field drive to right, and cheered even louder when he came out of the dugout for a curtain call.

CONCORD, N.C. — Tony Schumacher broke a tie with Joe Amato for the Top Fuel career victory record, taking the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals for his 53rd triumph.Schumacher powered his dragster to a final-round performance of 3.882 seconds at 317.64 mph to hold off Antron Brown (3.923 at 309.42). It was Schumacher’s seventh straight victory, 12th of the year, 28th consecutive elimination-round win — all NHRA season Top Fuel records.

MONZA, Italy — Sebastian Vettel became the youngest driver to win a Formula One race at the Italian Grand Prix, edging McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen by 12.5 seconds in the rain at Monza to give Torro Rosso its first win.While Vettel was making history, Lewis Hamilton showed that he is still a master of wet conditions. The McLaren driver dominated to hang onto the championship lead by a single point.

MOBILE, Ala. — Angela Stanford won the Bell Micro LPGA Classic for her second career LPGA Tour title, holing a 3Z\x-foot par putt on the final hole for a 1-over 73 and a one-stroke victory over China’s Shanshan Feng.The 30-year-old Texan had an 11-under 277 total.

CONOVER, N.C. — R.W. Eaks successfully defended his tournament title, closing with a 1-under 71 in windy conditions for a four-stroke victory over Tom Jenkins and Tom Kite.The 56-year-old Eaks had a 16-under 200 total on the Rock Barn Golf and Spa course and earned $255,000 for his second victory of the year.
