IRVING, Texas — Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo broke his right pinkie on the first play of overtime in a 30-24 loss at Arizona on Sunday, and could be out up to four weeks.
The injury leaves the Cowboys (4-2) with 40-year-old Brad Johnson as the starter for Sunday's game at St. Louis. Johnson hasn't started a game since 2006 in Minnesota.
Coach Wade Phillips said Monday Romo won't need surgery on his finger, and the timing of his return depends on how fast that heals. The Cowboys have three games before an open date Nov. 9.
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts coach Tony Dungy confirmed, after nearly two months of deflecting questions, that Peyton Manning had a second surgery on his knee before returning in late August.Dungy does not believe the second surgery was the reason the team had a sluggish start.Manning was not available in the locker room Monday, a day after the Colts routed Baltimore 31-3, in what was easily his best game of the season. Manning typically does interviews only on Wednesdays and after games.
COLUMBIA, S.C.— Tommy Bowden resigned Monday as Clemson's football coach midway through his 10th season, which started with the Tigers ranked No. 9 and picked to win the ACC.The school appointed receivers coach Dabo Swinney the interim head coach.Clemson went 72-45 (43-32 ACC) and made eight bowl appearances under Bowden, who was honored as ACC coach of the year in 1999 and 2003. But the son of storied football coach Bobby Bowden seemed unable to meet expectations.
NEW YORK — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown's racing career is over after injuring his right front foot during a workout at Aqueduct.Trainer Rick Dutrow said the 3-year-old colt, preparing for the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25, appeared to kick himself while working on the turf course with stablemate Kip Deville. Big Brown completed the six-furlong work when Dutrow noticed blood coming out of the foot.Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables, co-owners of Big Brown, said the horse who captivated the racing world during his Triple Crown bid will not race again.
