PITTSBURGH — Butler senior Mara Shingleton placed third in the girls 16-to-18 age division at the final King's Tri-State Section PGA Junior Tournament series event of the year Wednesday at Highland Country Club.

Shingleton shot a 44 in the nine-hole, rain-shortened event, five strokes behind champion Rhiannon Ray.

Shingleton finished among the top 10 in points in the series, qualifying her to compete in the Player of the Year Championship Aug. 5 at the Mystic Rock Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

BUTLER TWP — The Butler Township 15-year-old baseball team won the North Hills Federated Baseball League's Colt Division championship Tuesday night, defeating West View Ross, 6-2.The team also defeated Ingomar 17-1 and Kiski 10-6 to go unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament. The Colt Division has 20 teams.Matthew Baranchak was the winning pitcher in the finale, striking out six. Dalton Koebler had a double, a single and two RBI, David Tompkins had a double an RBI, and Dante Dorcy and Baranchak had RBI singles. Koebler had six hits in the tournament.Butler Township, 26-5 overall this season, travels to Trenton, N.J., to compete in the East Zone Tournament.

CHASKA, Minn. — Phil Mickelson will play at next month's PGA Championship.Organizers said Mickelson is confirmed as an entrant for the event at Hazeltine in Minnesota. It's the fourth and final major of the season.Mickelson has been away from the tour for nearly two months as his wife, Amy, copes with breast cancer. He's scheduled to play his first event back on the tour next week at the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.Mickelson played a practice round Wednesday at Hazeltine, looking relaxed as he hit a long drive on the par-5 15th and chatted with his playing partners.Mickelson had played in 61 consecutive major tournaments before skipping the British Open. The PGA Championship starts Aug. 13.
