SLIPPERY ROCK — Three Slippery Rock University men's soccer players received all-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Jeremy Deighton was named first-team all-America at forward. He recorded 21 goals, seven assists and 49 points. Greg Blum was named third-team all-America at goaltender, posting a 17-4-1 record with eight shutouts.

Thomas Pool, a center back on defense, also received third-team honors. He headed a defensive unit that surrendered only 20 goals in 23 games this year.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Three senior Slippery Rock University baseball players received preseason all-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.Pitcher Vince Lloyd made the second team after leading SRU with an 8-1 record and a 3.19 earned run average last season.Second baseman Billy Messer, a Slippery Rock High graduate, earned third-team honors after hitting .344 with 14 doubles, two triples, four homers and 37 RBI last spring.Outfielder Jacob Oswalt also earned a third-team nod after hitting .379 with 15 doubles, a triple, five homers and 43 RBI last season.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The issue of head shots in hockey games was raised again, this time at the NHL board of governors meeting.Building off discussions from last month's general managers meetings, NHL director of hockey operations Colin Campbell made a 45-minute video presentation Tuesday night, detailing changes in the game over the years.The players' union would like a rule established that would ban dangerous head shots that have led to concussions.
