CINCINNATI — Slippery Rock High School graduate Jence Rhoads had 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot to key Vanderbilt University's 83-76 overtime victory over DePaul in the first round of the NCAA Women's National Championships Sunday at the Cintas Center at Xavier University.
Rhoads shot five-of-11 from the field and sank five of her six free-throw attempts for the No. 6-seeded Commodores (23-10), who scored the first 11 points of overtime to pull away from the No. 11 seed Blue Demons (21-12).
Vanderbilt will play host Xavier, a 94-82 winner over East Tennessee State, on Tuesday. The Musketeers are the No. 3 seed in the Sacramento Region.
BRADENTON, Fla. — Pittsburgh right-hander Daniel McCutchen's start was pushed back a day after the Pirates' game against the Tampa Bay Rays was rained out on Sunday.He'll pitch Monday in Clearwater against the Phillies' Triple-A club — an assignment that indicates he's closed the gap on Kevin Hart in the race to be Pittsburgh's fifth starter.Closer Octavio Dotel, out all spring due to a strained oblique, will make his first appearance Monday against another Phillies' minor-league team.Rays right-hander Andy Sonnanstine also was pushed back. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Teemu Selanne became the 18th player in NHL history to score 600 goals, reaching the milestone Sunday night in the Anaheim Ducks' 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.The only other European-born players in the 600-goal club are Finnish countryman Jari Kurri (601) and the Czech Republic's Jaromir Jagr (646).The 39-year-old Selanne is the fourth player to reach the milestone in the last four seasons, along with Jagr, Brendan Shanahan, and Joe Sakic.
NORFOLK, Va. — Connecticut's pursuit of perfection is off to a great start in the NCAA tournament.The Huskies impressed even coach Geno Auriemma with a crisp and merciless 5-minute burst to open the second half in their first-round game against Southern University in a 95-39 victory.Already ahead by 23 at the break, but unhappy with how they had played, the Huskies scored 21 of the first 23 points after halftime and coasted to their 73rd straight victory.
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Jim Furyk showed the nerves of a player trying to win for the first time on the PGA Tour. Considering how long it had been since his last victory, it felt that way.Furyk closed with a 2-under 69 on Sunday for a one-shot victory over K.J. Choi in the Transitions Championship, his first victory since the 2007 Canadian Open to end his longest winless stretch since he first joined the tour 16 years ago.
